Want to make your living space more comfortable? Well insulated walls eliminate drafts and cold spots, enhancing your home’s comfort. Having adequate insulation in your ceiling and exterior walls also saves you money on heating and cooling  A well insulated attic stops heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer, and can save you up 30-50% in energy bills.

And it might be FREE!

For renters, homeowners and landlords in 1-4 unit buildings, air sealing is at no cost and insulation ranges from 75-100% off.

Any of your costs are eligible for a 0% Mass Save Heat Loan.  Plus, starting in 2023, you will be eligible for a 30% federal tax credit up to $1,200 per year for insulation and air sealing from the Inflation Reduction Act. Estimate your savings via this calculator from Rewiring America. How the Mass Save rebates and federal tax credits may be combined remains to be determined.

Don’t let barriers like old wiring or vermiculite stop you from getting insulation. Incentives from $250 for ventilation issues to $7,000 for knob and tube mitigation may be available from Mass Save. Eligible for a 0% Mass Save Heat Loan.

Due to coronavirus precautions, you can schedule a virtual home energy assessment rather than an in-person assessment. However, you will need to be able to access your attic and any crawlspaces in order to get the most value from your assessment. See the Steps to Take tab at the top to see more details.

Why is an assessment no-cost to me? And a discount on insulation?   Eversource deducts a small amount from your electricity bill each month that funds the program to promote energy efficiency. You are eligible for a free assessment every two years. Based on the assessment, the assessor will make recommendations on insulation and other improvements and recommend contractors.

Steps to Take

Home Energy Asssessment

  1. During the home energy assessment online, you will likely be asked to show:
    1. the heating and cooling systems
    2. the attic, exterior walls and basement to determine if any areas need insulation
    3. lights and thermostats
  2. At then end of the home energy assessment, you will receive recommended actions for property improvements.
  3. You will then select a vendor from a provided list and schedule a tentative date for any recommended insulation or heating or cooling equipment upgrades. These in-home improvements will only be completed upon your approval and once the state, the Mass Save program, and the vendor are confident that they can do the work safely.
